Ceiling worms. You should also notice cast off skins. The worms will grow to about inch size 1 7 centimeters and they have a black or brown head. After hatching the larvae are white colored worms that may be seen crawling along walls or on the ceiling.
If the worms are limited to your kitchen and are crawling up walls and along ceilings it s a good bet that they are indianmeal moth larvae. The long oval shaped little case or bag that is most commonly found in homes and garages are the cocoon created by the larval or caterpillar stage of a moth. In summary one of our readers discovered hundreds of small black worm like organisms on her ceiling.
Some might even live in your sinks and drains. House flies are common indoor pests that lay eggs indoors and outdoors. The other white worms in that size range that can be found in kitchens are fly maggots but those do not have legs.
While their presence on the ceiling isn t ideal these larvae are harmless. We recommend that our reader thoroughly clean her ceiling to eliminate any other potential food sources for these larvae. Check your corners and in the dark areas of pantries for moth worms and cocoons.
Dust worms are another common name for these creatures. Part of the reason these insects are found stuck to walls and ceilings is that they have climbed up there to be closer to.
