How to replace ceiling tiles. If the damage is so severe that the paint cannot conceal it your only alternative is to replace the tile. Fortunately our damaged ceiling tiles were in a corner of the basement used as a laundry room. Use a caulking gun to apply panel adhesive to the furring strip or to put four dabs on the back of the tile if you re attaching it directly to the ceiling.
With this style you won t need to purchase additional cross tees just pop out the old ceilings and place in the new. Using your thumb lightly smooth the damaged area before you paint it. Alternatively nail the tile to the wood strapping with 4d finishing nails countersink the nails with a nail set and hammer and fill the holes with acrylic caulk.

The replacement tiles have two sides with an extended lip for stapling to the framework as well as a recessed groove for the lip of the tile next to it see first photo below. For a quick update pop old tiles out of the ceiling grid and replace with fresh ones. Remove the ceiling tiles.
We simply removed all tiles in that corner to install replacement tiles. Space is just enough to angle the tiles into place. As long as the paint color is a close match the spot should be largely invisible to the casual observer.
